Best's Win 2021 Halliday Wine Companion Best Value Winery of the Year

Congratulations to Best’s Wines, named the Best Value Winery of the Year at the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. This accolade is not based on the most inexpensive wines, but rather the quality to price ratio. As Halliday explains, “the Best’s wines are consistently elegant and delicious, and for the world-class quality they provide, they’re exceptionally well-priced – they’re more than deserving of consideration as some of Australia’s best value.” With over 9000 wines tasted and 1165 wineries reviewed this is an outstanding achievement.

Of special note is the 2019 Old Vine Pinot Meunier which received 97 points. Best's winery is one of the few in the world to produce a pure pinot meunier and have some of the oldest vines in the world that date back to 1867. Halliday himself described pinot meunier as one of his “absolute go-to wines”. He further noted “Ben Thomson and his father, Viv, would also likely point to the $25 price-tag for the core range of 2019 Riesling, 2019 Pinot Noir, 2018 Shiraz, 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2019 Dolcetto, all given 95 points by either Jane Faulkner or me. I haven’t attempted a forensic search, but I can’t remember a five-core-varietal band coming up so consistently.”

Eight of Best’s wines scored over 95 points and retained their red winery 5 star rating. A massive congratulations to the entire Best’s team!

2019 Old Vine Pinot Meunier

97 points

“It’s one thing to have seriously old vines, planted in 1868 by Henry Best, and quite another to have them metamorphose into a contemporary wine full of harmony and balance. Well here it is in all its beauty. Heady with florals aplenty, an array of Middle Eastern spices and mint with a delicacy on the palate, yet there’s substance and detail too. A wine of finesse and elegance. Respect.”

2018 Bin No. 1 Shiraz

“Picked by hand and by Opti sorter/harvester, whole berry fermentation with 5% whole bunches. Wine show success is no surprise. Typical Great Western wine of high quality, intensity, focus and length to its spicy/peppery black forest floor fruits, achieved with a modest alcohol content. 14% alc. Drink now to 2038.”

2019 Dolcetto

95 points

“A dolcetto with its own distinctive DNA. Expect a wave of florals led by lavender with fresh herbs and eucalyptus infusing the dark plums. It’s buoyant and bright across the palate but don’t be fooled, plenty of fine-sandpaper tannins shaping this. Spot on.”

2019 Great Western Riesling

95 points

“Whole-bunch pressed to stainless steel for cold fermentation, stopped with 7g/l residual sugar. Gold medal Melbourne Wine Awards ’19, top-gold Victorian Wine Show ’19. It has the intense lime zest and pith flavours I find irresistible. Bright acidity glides alongside the fruit.”

2019 Great Western Pinot Noir

95 points

“Under Justin Purser’s guidance, pinot noir constantly excels and morphs beautifully. This crackles with pleasure and the 50% whole bunches in the ferementation add sapidity as much as stemmy, albeit ripe, flavours. Cherries and piops, star anise and menthol, a palate that’s light and bright with supple tannins and tangy citrusy acidity. Absurdly priced as in a bargain.”
