Best’s Wines

Founded in 1866, we are a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world.  Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling are our specialties, but we also produce small-parcel wines that are exclusive to our cellar door.

Henry Best’s original Nursery Block, containing more than 40 different varieties and featuring his old Shiraz and Pinot Meunier plantings, are among Australia’s most valuable vineyard resources.  Best’s is said to have the oldest Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir original clones in the world.

Best’s Wines was purchased by the Thomson family back in 1920 and is today run by 5th generation Ben Thomson.  The Thomson family have been vignerons in this region since 1893 and continue to keep producing great wines for people’s enjoyment.

There is something very special about the wines from Best’s Wines.  The pedigree of our historic vineyards allows us to make elegant, finely structured wines with great intensity and balance.  Bes’s avoids the heavy-handed use of oak or winery interventions; instead, the winemaking team allows the fruit from Great Western to tell its own story.  Like many classic long-lived wines, their best attributes are revealed over time.

Best’s flagship wines, the Thomson Family Shiraz and Bin No. 0 Shiraz, have been designated ‘Exceptional’ and ‘Outstanding’ respectively by Langton’s Auction House.  With our 2014 Thomson Family winning James Halliday’s Wine of Year back in 2016.

We are proud to be acknowledged as a James Halliday 5-Star Rated Winery, and voted Australia’s Best Value Winery for 2021 by James Halliday.
